Home Video Cabinet appointed Committee not a holistic approach to Entertainment’s Industry Piracy Issues.
Thursday September 4th 2008.
RIATT has been proposing
the establishment of a multi-agency anti-piracy task force.
An agency comprising representatives from the Trinidad and Tobago Police service,
Customs and Excise, Intellectual Property Office, Copyright and Neighboring
Rights organizations, Music Industry Trade Associations, and other relevant
bodies
This proposed agency will be identified as the central body to carry out various enforcement provisions within the newly Amended Copyright Act 2008. By taking this approach, International organizations such as the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), Interpol, and the FBI’s anti-piracy units will find it more feasible in granting Trinidad and Tobago assistance as a united stakeholder body rather than just a Home Video committee.
RIATT expresses its dissatisfaction in the Intellectual Property Office’s approach to remedy the country’s piracy problem. Again this shows the incompetence of the decision makers of the IPO office. They need to evolve and bring themselves up to speed with the present technological environment
Entertainment Industry stakeholders want to see all forms of piracy curtailed in Trinidad and Tobago and not just the Home Video Sector. In addition to the eradication of illegal businesses offering the sale of counterfeit DVDs, we must also address online websites offering sale of unauthorized recordings, music videos, master ring tones and other entertainment content.
