RIATT to Launch FairPlay in AirPlay Campaign.

Monday 29th February 2010

The Recording Industry association of T&T (RIATT) is turning the heat up as it embarks on a campaign to secure fair amounts of airplay for new and upcoming artistes. Were you satisfied with the musical offerings of carnival 2k10? Is it fair to say, it’s the best we had to offer when there were many potential songs that never got the chance to be heard?

Radio stations shun questions such as;
What are the criteria that determine what songs make the play list? Or
What is the determining factor for songs to receive heavier rotation over others?
It's RIATT’s responsibility, to ensure that radio stations encourage a fair and generous amount of airplay among all participating artistes and not just a select few.

Not discounting the effects of You Tube, MySpace and other alternative means of exposure, Radio is still one of the best ways for artistes to get their music heard. Unfortunately, artistes that do not enjoy heavy rotation are left out of the following prospects and more:

• Gaining popularity, general recognition and approval by the listening public.
• The chance of being hired by event promoters.
• Income from non dramatic performances. (Radio broadcasts and public performances)
• Licensing of their music to CD compilations, movies, theatrical productions, etc.
• Income from sales i.e. pays per download or physical cds
• Conversion of music into master ring tones.
• Product endorsement

RIATT is calling on all artistes that have fallen victims to one or all of the above prospects to join forces with us as we take action to effect change on this issue.

Let us ensure the relevant matters of interest are brought to the forefront.
• Is there a radio mafia? Is there evidence of (pay for play) aka Payola?
• We are all aware of the perception ‘who pays the piper calls the tune’. Is the advertising dollar controlling our musical climate?
• Do we need to sensitize corporate entities that advertise on local radio stations as to the negative effects unfair airplay has on the industry?
• Are we asking for a good practice policy or do we want firm legislation?
• Should we call on Radio stations to exercise social responsibility?
• A number of corporate entities publicize slogans within the context of ‘We support Local Culture’ do we need to challenge them on the integrity of their slogans?
